What is TwentseWelle?
TwentseWelle is a wonderful new interactive museum in Enschede. TwentseWelle tells the fascinating tale of how people came and settled in the region of Twente, shortly after the last Ice Age. The museum covers many aspects of this story, from the natural environment, hunting, gathering and farming to the development of the countryside into towns and regions, the rise of industry, the workforce, technology and society. This forms the basis for the Epic Story (Het Grote Verhaal), which shows how humankind and the natural world interact and develop. TwentseWelle shows an evolution that is taking place throughout the Netherlands and in the wider world. It is a universal story, with Twente at its heart.
The extensive collection of natural-historical and cultural exhibits illustrates the Epic Story and is displayed in the open depot, one of the largest showcases in Europe. Active and interactive presentations bring the Epic Story to life and put it in context. A series of distinctive dioramas forge a link with global themes such as water, identity and religion.
